11 killed, 140 Injured in Japan’s Typhoon Hagibis

New Delhi, October 13, 2019:

At least 11 people were killed and more than 140 people were injured in Japan’s powerful Typhoon Hagibis. Many have also been reported to be missing in the natural disaster.

The typhoon triggered deadly landslides and caused rivers to burst their banks on Saturday night.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) said that the typhoon occurred around 7 pm on the Izu Peninsula, southwest of Tokyo. It also issued an ‘Emergency Weather Warning (Level 5)’ and urged people to stay alert. Heavy rain and wind have been predicted in the next few days.

The military has deployed helicopters to rescue people seen standing on balconies. Around 427 households and at least 1,417 individuals were issued evacuation orders overnight.

It may be mentioned here that Typhoon Hagibis hit the Japanese island of Honshu around 7:00 pm Saturday with wind gusts of up to 216 km per hour.

The storm had weakened as it approached Japan, yet remained highly dangerous, with maximum winds of up to 195 km per hour.

Hagibis caused disconnection of all means of transportation. However, train services were gradually resumed and operations slowly began at the two airports serving the capital. However, many flights remained cancelled following the bad weather.
