New Delhi, February 14, 2020:

The fight against COVID-19 (Coronavirus) has taken a turn for the worse with more than 60,000 people confirmed cases worldwide.

The National Health Commission of China reported a total of 59,804 cases in the country, which has been increasing at a rapid rate. Officials of China on Thursday revealed that new cases of COVID-19 had surged nearly 10-fold from the day before. The death toll has crossed 1300. There has been a jump in new deaths, i.e. 242.

14,840 new cases of the flu-like virus has also been reported. That brings the worldwide death toll to at least 1,357 and the number of confirmed cases to more than 60,000.

It may be mentioned here that China had earlier this week reported a drop in the number of new cases of the deadly COVID-19. It was expected that the outbreak would slow down.

On Thursday, health authorities in Hubei, the province at the center of the epidemic, announced there had been nearly 15,000 new cases overnight. The government said that the outbreak did not suddenly get worse and pointed out that the authorities had changed the way they reported cases in order to allow more people to access treatment faster.
