Mumbai Attacks Mastermind Hafiz Saeed Convicted in Terror Financing Case

New Delhi, February 12, 2020:

The mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attacks Jamaat-ud-Dawa(JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed has been convicted in terror financing charges on Wednesday.

A Pakistani anti-terrorism court has sentenced Hafiz to five and a half years' prison in two terror-financing cases under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA). He has been sentenced to six months' imprisonment for being a member of a "proscribed organisation" under Pakistani law, and another five years for a charge related to "illegal property", said his lawyer, Imran Gill.

Hafiz Saeed will also be fined Rs 15,000 in each case. It may be mentioned here that this is the first time that the mastermind behind the Mumbai attacks has been formally convicted of his offence.

He was earlier banned by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. He faces as many as 23 terror cases in Pakistan.
