US President Donald J Trump on Wednesday became only the third US president in history to be impeached, with the House of Representatives formally charging him with “abuse of power” and “obstruction of Congress”.
The Democrat-controlled U.S. House of Representatives passed the “abuse of power” article of impeachment largely along party lines, with 230-197 votes in favour. This was followed by voting on the “obstruction of Congress” article which was passed 229-198.

The trial against the US president is set up in January in the Republican-run Senate, with senators asked to decide on whether to convict him and remove him from office.
Trump had allegedly abused his power as president by pressuring the foreign government of Ukraine to announce a corruption investigation into Democratic Former Vice President Joe Biden, a potential political rival in 2020. The Democrats accused the president of endangering the U.S. Constitution and jeopardizing national security.
Reports say that Trump pressed Ukraine’s new president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, in a July 25 phone call to work with his attorney general, William Barr, and his personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani. The talk was to investigate the Bidens and also a debunked theory that Ukraine, not Russia, interfered in the 2016 election.

Meanwhile, Trump argued that he has done nothing wrong while addressing a rally in Michigan. He mocked the impeachment process, calling it "impeachment lite" and claiming he was the only president to be impeached with "no crime".
Trump also took to Twitter, and said, “SUCH ATROCIOUS LIES BY THE RADICAL LEFT, DO NOTHING DEMOCRATS. THIS IS AN ASSAULT ON AMERICA, AND AN ASSAULT ON THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!!!!”
