The Joint Action Committee Against Forced Inauguration of
Mapithel Dam (JAC, AFIMD) has called for a 48 hour bandh in Manipur
from midnight of March 14 to March 16. The bandh has been called to protest the failure of the state government in upholding the constitution in the. The JAC has submitted a joint memorandum to the Prime Minister of India on February 28 and another to the governor of Manipur on March1 requesting the non-commission of Mapithel Dam till the demands of the affected people are fulfilled.
JAC also stated that the affected land owner must be compensated adequately in concurrence with Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, which the government has failed to do so. It also asserted that the National Green Tribunal, Eastern Zone Bench, Kolkata in its judgement order stated that state government has violated the statutory requirement provide under the FRA 2006, as such a direction has been given to the state government to comply with the provisions of the said FRA within three months. The state government has failed to comply with the said order till date and the attempt to inaugurate
the dam is against the law. JAC further stated that the bandh was called in
protest against such act of the government and any untoward incident
during the bandh will be at their own risk. Educational institutions,
medical, water supply, electricity and media will be exempted from the
purview of the bandh.
