BJP Overpowers Regional Parties in Northeast By-Polls; Wins 5 Seats Out 9

Guwahati, October 24, 2019:

Continuing its strong run in 2019 elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) impressed once again in the by-polls held in 9 Assembly Constituencies across the Northeast, and further strengthened its newfound grip in Sikkim.

Assam:

The BJP party won three seats in Assam, while the fourth seat was Nabbed by the AIUFF. The BJP candidates Bijoy Malakar, Nabanita Handique, and Rajen Borthakur won the elections from Ratabari, Sonari, and Rangapara, respectively.

Meanwhile, the fourth and last seat, Jania, went to the Badruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF party. Hafiz Rafiqul Islam of the AIUDF has thumped his nearest rival, Congress’ Shomsul Haque, by a hefty margin of 35,037 votes in the by-election in the Jania Constituency in Assam.

Meghalaya: 

United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate Balajied Synrem has won the election from the Shella Assembly Constituency, with a margin of 6,221 votes. It maybe mentioned here that the UDP candidate, who is also the son of departed UDP leader Donkupar Roy, was also backed by the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), who have not fielded any candidates.

Arunachal Pradesh: 

Assassinated National People’s Party (NPP) MLA Tirong Aboh’s wife Chakat Aboh has won the election from the Khonsa West Constituency by a hefty margin of 1,887 votes. Aboh’s candidature was supported by all the major political parties in the State, including the ruling BJP-party.

Sikkim:

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, popularly known as PS Golay, has won the election from the Poklok-kamrang Constituency.

Yong Tshering Lepcha of the Bharatiya Janata Party bags the Gangtok constituency with 2,508 votes. His nearest rival, Delay Namgyal Barfungpa of Sikkim National People's Party secured 1,498 votes.

Sonam Tsh Venchungpa of BJP won in Martam Rumtek by a huge margin (8,204 votes). He defeated his closest competitor Nuk Tshering Bhutia of Sikkim Democratic Front (2,054 votes).
