Governor Najma Heptulla felicitated the three gold medallists, world champion boxer, MC Mary Kom and weightlifters, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu, at Raj Bhavan on April 28th.
Expressing her happiness, the governor said that the three women have brought laurels to the state not only at national level but in the international level too. She continued that the girls of the state should be trained more to form a team of India to compete in the International events. She also said that people of the state have become famous in making sports equipment like the indigenous innovation of Modern Indian Round Take Down Bow by B. Chaoba Sharma.
Heptulla also expressed that funds should be raised to save the special breed Manipuri Pony as its future is a serious issue. She continued that the Central government had a lot more to do for the state stating that she had urged the Union minister of Sports to visit Manipur as the Sports University have started functioning. Appreciating the initiative taken by Sports minister, Letpao Haokip, she said that she had talked with the Union Sports minister about the establishment of Football Academy which is very essential for the state.
Prior to the felicitation programme attended by Letpao Haokip and families of the gold medallists, the governor had an interaction with the students of St. Mary and Sajik Tampak Government Higher Secondary School located at Sajik Tampak, Chandel district. The students visited the state capital on a two-day tour organised by 4th Assam Rifles, Sajik Tampak.
It may be mentioned that MC Mary Kom won gold medal in boxing in 45-48 kg category whereas, S. Mirabai Chanu and Kh. Sanjita Chanu won gold medals in weightlifting in the 48 kg category and 53 kg category respectively, in the recently concluded Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, 2018 held in Australia
