Shillong, March 18, 2019:

The daughter has continued the father’s legacy. Agatha K Sangma, who has been chosen as the National People’s Party (NPP) candidate to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Tura Constituency has flagged off her election campaign from Adokgre village in East Garo Hills, where she was joined by her brother, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and mother, Soradini Sangma.

What is the relevance of this tiny village, you might ask? Well, it is the same village where the late-Purno Agitok Sangma, the former Meghalaya Chief Minister, used to begin his election campaigns from. Thus, it can be argued that the young politician (Agatha is only 38) is following in the footsteps of her father, who passed away in 2016. She was also previously the youngest Minister of State during the second Manmohan Singh-led UPA Government.

The Tura Constituency is an important goal for the Conrad Sangma-led NPP party as the MDA has decided to field UDP’s Jemino Mawthoh from the Shillong Constituency. Meanwhile, the BJP, another party in the alliance, will contest elections by itself in both the Constituencies in Meghalaya: Shillong and Tura.
