Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who has often been touted as a ‘Northeast hero’ for his role in defeating the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, expressed his thoughts regarding the issue at the India Today Conclave, 2019. Despite being a part of the NDA alliance, Sangma lobbied in New Delhi to gather opposition to the Bill, which ultimately led to its lapse in Parliament.
Sangma stated that despite being in an alliance with the BJP, the NPP party has its own identity and thus, he opposed the Bill based on the ‘spirit of the Bill’.
“Illegal immigration is something that my political party is against and whether you are a Muslim, Christian, Hindu or any religion, an illegal immigrant is an illegal immigrant for us”, he said.
Responding to queries of whether Sangma’s NPP will step out of the Alliance with the BJP if the Bill is passed, Sangma said that “We have informed the leaders of the NDA that if the Bill is passed, we have said that we will leave the NDA.”
