Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, along with a delegation from the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah amid rising demands from the people for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit in the State.
After a late-night meeting with Shah at around 12:30 am on Saturday, Sangma took to Twitter to further inform that "The State Govt will convene a one day special session to bring in Govt resolution to implement ILP."
Sangma stated that his meeting with Union Minister Shah was “fruitful” and expressed hope that the ILP will be extended to Meghalaya soon.
Thousands of Meghalaya citizens took to the streets to demand Inner Line Permit (ILP) to safeguard the State against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act.
It may be mentioned here that after the Bill passed in the Rajya Sabha, the streets of Shillong turned chaotic. Acts of vandalism were also reported from various pockets of the city, and the business establishments were also closed down. Moreover, it has been reported that around 10,000 locals gheraoed the Raj Bhavan on December 13 as a sign of protest against the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Bill in both Houses of the Parliament.
Ever since the Union Ministry’s decision to extend ILP to the state of Manipur, demands for its implementation have also started coming in from the other Northeastern states,
In Assam, for instance, local bodies such as the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) is demanding the implementation of ILP to safeguard the State from the newly-enacted Citizenship Amendment Act.
