Guwahati, February 13, 2019:

The faces at the Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma’s residence in Delhi wore a look of jubilation as the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 was not tabled in the Rajya Sabha today. In all likelihood, the Bill shall not be raised for discussion again, thus leading to suggestions that it has suffered a 'natural death'.

Addressing the media, the man-of-the-hour, Sangma, said that the voice of the people has been heard, and added further that it is a “great and emotional” moment for people of the Northeast. "Sentiments of the people, especially of the Northeast has prevailed. The voices of the people have prevailed", he added.

The CM thanked the NGO’s, student bodies as well as media organizations for their role in the struggles against the Bill. Sangma also thanked the political parties who had joined hands to ensure the failure of the Bill, including the Asom Gana Parishad, who had initiated the movement in political circles.

Regarding his alignment with the NDA, Sangma said that it is not the time to announce political alignments or realignments and at the appropriate moment, such discussions will happen. “At this moment, what is important is that the Bill did not go through”, he added.

“It was emotional to see the people of the Northeast united as one voice and that is a great message for the rest of the country”, he said.

Sangma has been widely hailed as a 'Northeast hero' after his efforts to thwart the Bill and all leaders from the region has been hailing him as the most instrumental figure in the demise of the Bill.
