Protesters have hit the streets in Mizoram capital Aizawl ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit on Saturday. The protesters have hit the streets carrying banners exhorting the ruling NDA administration to leave Mizoram and other Northeast Indian states outside the ambit of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
Carrying banners with strong messages such as 'you behave like the British many years ago', 'don't try and exploit our land, no hidden agenda please', the citizens concerned about the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill have exhorted the BJP to reconsider implementing the Bill here as it could have disastrous ramifications on the people of the Northeast Indian states. Protesters spread around kilometer long street between AR Ground and Treasury Square, holding aloft the banners and placards.
People’s Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram (PRISM) Party and Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC) Party are heading the street demonstrations in capital city Aizawl to protest the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
PRISM Party president Vanlalruata says, “Whether we welcome or protest, CAB implementation is mandate for BJP as they promised in their MP Election Manifesto, but to protest is our right. As the BJP had promised exemption of Mizoram and other North East States in their election campaign, hence, they must exempt us. It is their mandate too”.
Downplaying the concerns over Shah's visit, Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has shared on Twitter that “there is widespread enthusiasm among people in Mizoram over the visit”. He further informed that the Mizo NGO Coordination Committee shall welcome Shah and submit a memorandum.
