Bharat Bandh, called by ten Central Trade Unions will witness as many as 25 crore workers protesting against the government policies across the country on January 8.
The trade unions decided to call for the nationwide Bharat Bandh to raise their concerns over the policies of the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government.

Ten trade unions will take part in the countrywide bandh on Wednesday. These are INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, UTUC along with other sectoral independent federations and associations. The All India Bank Employees’ Association will also join the millions of workers on the national strike to oppose Anti-Worker Labour Reforms.
The most important issues and demands of the central trade unions are – price control, more jobs for the unemployed youth, right to job and wage, job security, ensuring minimum wage of Rs. 21,000, pension and bonus for all, scrapping of new pension scheme, etc.
Speaking with Inside Northeast, President of Assam Provincial Bank Employees’ Association, Guwahati Committee, Saumya Dasgupta said, “We have decided to join the millions of workers on January 8. We oppose the government’s policies and we certainly do not wish for the privatization of banks and public sector companies. We do not want merging of banks. Our demands are an increase in the interest rate on Deposits and recovery of bad loans. We also demand strict measures to recover the defaulted loans from the Corporates.
