New Delhi, December 11, 2019:

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday in a tweet termed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill as a “criminal attack on the northeast”, and an attempt by the government to “ethnically cleanse” the region.

In the tweet, Rahul Gandhi said, “The CAB is an attempt by Modi-Shah Govt to ethnically cleanse the North East. It is a criminal attack on the North East, their way of life and the idea of India. I stand in solidarity with the people of the North East and am at their service..”

The tweet was sent out from Rahul's official Twitter handle merely hours ahead of the introduction of the Citizenship Bill in the Rajya Sabha by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

It is to be mentioned here that the Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha after a discussion on December 9, and secured 311 votes in its favour.

Meanwhile, the states of the North East, and especially Assam and Tripura have launched massive protests opposing the Bill. Lakhs of protestors from across the Northeastern region have been seen protesting against the Bill on the streets.
