New Delhi, April 12, 2020:

The Union Health Ministry on Sunday said that there were 8,356 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country. In the last 24 hours, the country has recorded 909 new cases and 34 fatalities.

According to the Health Ministry, India has 7,367 active cases while 716 have recovered and 273 people have died of the virus as on Sunday.

Here are the top States with the highest number of cases in the country -

Maharashtra - 1,895 cases and 127 deaths

Delhi - 1,069 cases and 19 deaths

Tamil Nadu - 969 cases and 10 deaths

Rajasthan - 751 cases and 3 deaths

Madhya Pradesh - 532 cases and 36 deaths

Telangana - 504 cases and 9 deaths

Uttar Pradesh - 452 cases and 5 deaths

Gujarat - 493 cases and 23 deaths

Maharashtra recorded 134 new COVID-19 positive cases, with 113 of these being from Mumbai city alone. The cumulative tally in the State soared to 1895 positive cases on Sunday, said health officials.

14 other cases were reported from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (excluding Mumbai city) including seven from Mira-Bhayander, two each from Thane, Navi Mumbai and Vasai-Virar, and one from Bhiwandi. Pune district recorded five new cases taking the tally to 262.

51 new cases of COVID-19 infection were detected in Rajasthan today, taking the total number of positive cases in the State to 751. Among the new cases, 15 each are from Jaipur and Banswara, 8 each from Jodhpur and Bikaner, 2 from Hanumangarh and 1 each from Churu, Jaisalmer and Sikar.

Medical & Health Department said 116 patients have been cured, having tested COVID-19 negative, and 58 of them have been discharged from isolation facilities.

According to the Gujarat State health department update on Sunday, 25 new cases of COVID-19 were detected in Gujarat while one patient succumbed to the infection. So far, 493 cases and 23 deaths have been reported in the State while 44 have recovered and discharged.

Wearing masks has been made mandatory in Gujarat's Ahmedabad city by the civic body. Not wearing it will attract a fine of Rs 1,000 for first-time violation and Rs 5,000 for subsequent violations and failing to pay the penalty will attract jail term of upto 3 years.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha and Punjab have extended their lockdown till April 30.

It may be mentioned here that the next 3-4 weeks will be critical to determine the impact of steps taken till now to curb spread of the virus, Prime MInister Narendra Modi told chief ministers on COVID-19 fight.

Narendra Modi’s meeting with Chief Ministers regarding extension of lockdown on Saturday, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, “PM has taken correct decision to extend lockdown.”

“Today, India’s position is better than many developed countries because we started lockdown early. If it is stopped now, all gains would be lost. To consolidate, it is imp to extend it,” he added.

Several states’ CMs have requested the PM to extend the lockdown period which is seen as a way to curb the spread of the deadly virus. The Goan CM, Pramod Sawant, has confirmed that he wants to lockdown extended.

In the meantime, more states including Odisha, Telangana, Chhattisgarh made it mandatory for people to wear masks or face covers at public places, while enforcement was beefed up for action against those violating the lockdown conditions.

Worldometers reports that 1,786,769 people have been affected by the coronavirus till date, and 109,275 people have died. The United States has reported 533,115 cases and 20,580 deaths, the highest of any country.
