The Goods and Services Tax Council has brought down the price of various items on Saturday. The GST on commonly used goods which had previously attracted a rate of 28%, are being slashed in what is being presumed as a move by the BJP to gain public approval ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections against a united opposition.
This move is expected to cost the national treasury around Rs. 5,500 a year.
The 28 per cent GST rate on movie tickets priced above Rs 100, television screens and monitors (up to 32 inches), digital cameras, video game consoles and power banks with lithium-ion batteries was cut to 18%, while parts and accessories for carriages for the disabled were brought down to 5%. Auto parts shall also be cheaper as part of the drive to make the GST more people-friendly.
