Guwahati, January 8, 2020:

Two women were evicted from their rented house after participating in a protest rally against the Citizenship Amendment Act at an Amit Shah rally in Delhi.

According to one of them, a mob tried to barge inside their residence after their participation in the rally.

One of the women, Surya Rajappan, in her statement, said that they had protested against the CAA during a pro- CAA rally by Amit Shah.

She added that she along with her flatmate displayed a banner from their balcony just as the rally led by Shah was passing through their lane. The banner read: Shame; CAA and NRC, crossed out; Jai Hind; Aazadi and #NotInMyName.

She mentioned that upon noticing them, the participants of Shah’s rally got agitated, and proceeded to harass and intimidate them by shouting threats and derogatory/misogynistic remarks.

According to the woman, around 150 people gathered around their apartment and the protest banner was torn and taken away.

Reportedly, the protesters even threatened to break down their doors, and the landlord of the house locked the common entrance to secure them from the angry mob and asked them to evict the residence.

After a long intervention of the police and their friends, their father was allowed to enter the house. The door to the stairway was unlocked after seven hours, and they were allowed to leave under the protection of the police, and they immediately packed their essentials and evicted from the rent house.

Following this, a police complaint was recorded against the criminal behaviour of the mob.
