The Second India Open International Boxing Tournament which started on May 20, 2019 at Guwahati’s Sarusajai stadium has come to a roaring end. The competition was held in a total of 18 categories: 10 in men and 8 in women.
On Friday, May 24, Indian boxing stars MC Mary Kom (51kg), Shiva Thapa (60kg), Amit Panghal (51kg) and L Sarita Devi bagged gold in their respective finals of the tournament at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium.
In the women’s 60kg category, Sarita Devi beat Simranjit Kaur for the gold medal, while in 51Kg category, Mary Kom and Amit Panghal got the better of Vanlal Duati and Sachin Siwach respectively.
The six-time world champion M.C.Mary Kom beat former National champion Vanlal Duati by 5-0 in 51kg to earn her second gold.
Asian Games gold medallist Amit Panghal asserted his class to get the better of Sachin Siwach in the 52 kg final with a 4-1 verdict.
Neeraj won the women’s 57kg crown against Asian bronze medallist Manisha Maun.
Sarita too defeated the current World championships bronze medalist (in 64kg) Simranjit to register a 3-2 win.
Thapa was awarded the best boxer of the tournament. Italy’s Francessa Amato emerged as the best in the women’s category.
In all, India earned a total of 57 medals including 12 Golds, 18 Silvers and 27 Bronze medals at the second edition of the India Open International Boxing tournament.
