Assam's ace pugilist Jamuna Boro marched into the semifinals of the World Boxing Championships in Russia, assuring herself of at least a bronze medal. Lovlina Borgohain, also from Assam, who won a bronze medal at last year's World Championships, also secured herself of another worlds medal.
Jamuna Boro defeated Germany's Ursula Gottlob 4-1 in the 54kg quarterfinals.

Borgohain's opponent in the semifinals would be China's Yang Liu, who shocked top seed Chen Nien-Chin in her quarterfinal clash.
Earlier, Mary Kom defeated Colombia's Valencia Victoria in her quarterfinal bout here to secure her maiden world medal in the 51kg category, in which she won an Olympic medal back in 2012.
In the process, the 3rd seed athlete also became the first boxer in the history of World Championships to win 8 world meet medals. She had tied Cuban men’s legend Felix Savon after winning the gold in the 48kg category in New Delhi in 2018.

This will also be Mary Kom’s first World Championships medal in the 51kg category as the Indian Olympic medallist looks to seal a Tokyo Olympic Games berth in the new weight category. So far, MC Mary Kom has 6 gold medals and a silver at the World Championships. Mary Kom will next face 2nd seeded Busenaz Cakiroglu of Turkey on Saturday.
Busenaz Cakiroglu, who is the reigning European Championships and European Games gold-medallist, awaits her in the next round. Cakiroglu defeated China's Cai Zongju in her quarterfinal bout.
