Guwahati, October 9, 2019:

Assam girls Jamuna Boro (54 kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) have surged into the quarterfinals of the World Women's Boxing Championships held in Ulan Ude in Russia on Wednesday. She defeated fifth-seeded Algerian Ouidad Sfouh, an African Games gold-medallist, third-seed Borgohain got the better of  Morocco's Oumayma Bel Ahbib, also a 5-0 win.

Jamuna Boro will next take on Belarus' Yuliya Apanasovich, who is seeded fourth. Apanasovich, a bronze-medallist at the European Championships, defeated Germany's Ursula

Gottlob in her pre-quarterfinal bout.

Next up for Borgohain is sixth-seeded Karolina Koszewska, who defeated Uzbekistan's Shakhnoza Yunusova. Poland's Koszewska had claimed a gold medal at this year's

European Games.

Meanwhile, six-time champion MC Mary Kom (51kg) yesterday advanced to the quarter-finals of the World Women’s Boxing Championships that is being held in Ulan-Ude, Russia.

MC Mary Kom advanced to the last eight after a hard-fought victory in the Last 16 stage here. Mary Kom triumphed 5-0 against Thailand’s Jutamas Jitpong, who proved to be a tough challenge to overcome for the six-time world champion.

It may be mentioned here that Mary Kom is chasing her first world medal in the 51kg division. However, the Indian boxers saw mixed fortunes as silver-medallist Saweety Boora (75kg) lost her pre-quarterfinal match. She lost against European Games gold-medallist Lauren Price.
