The century-old Diwali festival and fair at the Tripureswari in Tripura’s ancient city Udaipur saw a different form today as no animal sacrifices were reported during the Diwali puja. The festival and fair begun from Sunday morning and will continue till Tuesday.

Tripura High Court had recently banned animal sacrifices in the temples. The ‘Mangalarati’ at the bank of ‘Kalyan Sagar’ of Udaipur at 4:30 am was attended by Chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, along with his wife, on Sunday. ‘Tripura Sundari’, the holy mother was offered prayers in the wee hours. This was followed by the puja of Devi Kali at the temple.

With the rituals of ‘Mangalarati’ the festival of Deepavali at the Tripureswari temple Udaipur have been kicked off. As many as 51 ‘mangal pradeep’ (religious lamps) were brought from the different religious places of the country and were lit. The famous fair organized in the 113 years old Tripureswari temple is usually visited by over three lakh pilgrims every year.
The Tripureswari temple is situated in the ancient city of Udaipur, and is believed to be one of the holiest Hindu shrines in Northeast India. It is also considered to be one of the 51 Shakti Peethas which is believed to be the right leg of Sati.
