BJP Letting NRC Die Because They Want to Bring Citizenship Bill: Tarun Gogoibjp

Guwahati, November 14, 2019:

Three-time former Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, on Thursday, criticized the ruling BJP party and alleged that the BJP party is letting the National Register of Citizens (NRC) 'die', as their main objective is to implement the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Further, Gogoi hinted that the NRC procedure is dead, and the BJP-led Government in Assam is no longer interested in the NRC, as it seeks to introduce the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in an upcoming parliamentary session in December.

Gogoi said that while the main purpose of the NRC was to weed out illegal immigrants, many indigenous sons of the soil, despite having the proper documents, have been excluded from the final list. Many of the nineteen lakh excluded from the list are actually indigenous sons of the soil, Gogoi lamented.

Taking a swipe at the former NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela, Tarun Gogoi also questioned why he was given free rein of formulating the NRC, while more senior officials should have been given the responsibility of the NRC, instead.

The former Chief Minister also criticized the Assam Government of spending taxpayers' money on public gimmicks such as festivals, and called upon the Assam Government to spend on developmental projects, instead.
