In a move that is bound to bring relief to drivers, the government of India has removed the need of drivers to carry their documents (license, registration papers, etc). Instead, digitized forms of the documents will suffice.
This move will especially benefit the absent-minded drivers who are often caught by enforcement officials without essential documents and have to pay a hefty fine.
This has been confirmed by The Ministry of Surface Transport and National Highway and they have sent directives to the state governments to implement it after preparing a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) under rule 139 of the Motor Vehicle Act of 1989.
This move will give relief to the drivers including the ones from the Northeast, who most of the times forget to carry their license and are fined when caught by traffic police or enforcement officers. Drivers will be able to submit their documents through Digilocker app and mParivahan app and the documents will undergo verification through eChallan app.
It is to be mentioned that challans for rule breakers shall also be issued online. Documents which will be accepted include driving licence, registration certificate, insurance papers, medical certificate, and pollution free certificate, among others.
