Guwahati, December 15, 2019:

Assamese nationalism won big on Sunday as Artistes of Assam conducted a cultural protest titled “No C(A)A” to protest against the controversial amendment of the Citizenship Act, in Guwahati.

The concert for peace and harmony was attended by thousands of Guwahati residents and the Assam Engineering College’s field in Chandmari echoed with the chants of “Joi Aai Axom”.

Students, Actors, Singers and common people gathered to witness the biggest cultural protest against the contentious CAA, on Sunday.

It may be mentioned here that widespread protests have been going on in Assam over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which has now become the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the agitation turned massive post the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha passage.

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Chief Adviser, Samujjal Bhattacharya called for unity among the people of Assam and urged them to join in the peaceful protests to scrap the CAA in the days to come. He also extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Artistes of Assam for coming forward and taking active participation in the state’s struggle against the CAA.

Assam Singer Zubeen Garg, while addressing the gathering in Chandmari said, “The first thing is that the public should not face harassment in the name of CAA. I request the ones indulging in vandalism to refrain from doing so and let the normal life continue along with the Andolan.”

General Secretary, AASU, Lurinjyoti Gogoi said that five people have died in the name of CAA and that many more have been admitted to the hospital. “They are showing their power. The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has betrayed us. Congress is bad for us. So, we are in talks with the artistes to work for the society,” he informed.

Assam Actress Perastuti Parashar said that the government, through the CAA has attacked the soul of the people of Assam. Barsha Rani Bishaya, who has been vocal about the CAA said, “I don’t fear the government. I just know that the people of Assam would never accept CAA.”

Guwahati residents assembled in the Chandmari field to listen to the Singers and celebrities talk about the CAA and the threat it poses on the identity of the state.
