In Assam, the first day of the week-long Rongali Bihu is celebrated as Goru Bihu

This day is celebrated mainly by the rural folks of the state who have livestock, especially cows

On this day, people in Assam pay respects to the livestock, who are considered to be the backbone of agriculture

People light oil lamps and a special paste is prepared with turmeric and lentils and then smear it on the cattle

After this the cattle are taken to nearby rivers or ponds to give a proper bath

Leaves of dighalati and makhioti are also slapped on the skin of the cattle to avoid flies and infections

On this day, owners discard the old tying ropes and replace it with new strings
