Geographical Significance

Nagaon district, nestled along the Brahmaputra river, serves as Assam's central hub. Bounded by scenic landscapes, it boasts a strategic location between 25°45" and 26°45" North latitudes and 91°50" and 93°20" East longitudes.

With four Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) including Nagaon Municipal Board, Kampur Town Committee, Raha Town Committee, and Dhing Municipal Board, the district nurtures a diverse populace. As per the 2011 census, Nagaon district's population stood at 1,57,084, inhabiting an area of 3,973 square kilometers.

Urban Centers and Population Dynamics

Bordowa 'Batadrava' Than is a holy pilgrimage site in Nagaon, Assam. It is located in the birthplace of the great Assamese saint and social reformer Srimanta Sankardev.

Nagaon exudes a rich cultural amalgamation, showcasing influences from both Hindu and Islamic traditions. The district, especially Nagaon town, situated on the banks of River Kolong, epitomizes this cultural mosaic.

Cultural Amalgamation 

Formerly known as Khargarijan, Nagaon's origin dates back to the Ahom era. The town emerged from the ruins of Khagarijan, rebuilt under the leadership of Momai Tamuli Barbaruah, and was henceforth named Nagaon (Na = new & Gaon = village).

Historical Roots

Nagaon serves as a pivotal transportation junction, connected by road, rail, and air. It lies approximately 122 kilometers from Guwahati and boasts robust railway connectivity through Haibargaon and Nagaon stations. Additionally, it enjoys proximity to Tezpur airport (73 km) and Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (140 km).
