Guwahati, December 29, 2019:

Reiterating its stand of opposing the recently-passed Citizenship Amendment Act (or CAA), the Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee on Saturday organised a protest 'Flag March' in capital Itanagar, demanding its scrapping.

The Arunachal Congress, terming the protest as a 'Save India - Save Constitution' rally, marched in great numbers towards the Governor's residence ('Raj Bhavan') to raise their collective voices against the contentious 'CAA'. Later, the members of the Congress party, led by former APCC president Takam Sanjoy, also submitted a memoradum to the Governor.

It may be mentioned here that the announcement of the 'CAA' (formerly the 'CAB') sparked massive protests across the Northeast Indian region. Plans to implement the Bill were shelved in earlier this year amid massive protests in the NE. However, after the NDA Government was re-elected in a landslide victory, the BJP party resumed its plans to enact the Bill -- that makes it easier for non-Muslims from 3 neighboring countries to gain citizenship in India.

In a bid to appease the NE states, all states with ILP and areas protected under the 6th Schedule of the Constitution - were protected. Assam, which does not have such safeguards in most of the areas, found itself protesting alone.

The protests that began after the Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha, took a violent turn after it was pushed through the Upper House as well by the BJP.

Although the exemption of the NE states has quelled the rebellion somewhat, the states are still up in arms against the Bill-turned-Act that
