Arunachal highway damaged by flood; locals blame poor construction

ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh locals have blamed the poor and flawed construction of the recently constructed highway for having no proper drainage system amid the worsening flood situation in the capital city Itanagar.

Intense incessant rains accompanied by cyclone for the past couple of days has created havoc in different parts of Itanagar causing flood, landslide and damage to property.

According to the locals, there is no proper drainage system to absorb flood water during monsoon.

The newly constructed highway, which started on 21st September 2017, was completed three years after the expiry of the deadline in March 2021. Chief Minister Pema Khandu had earlier announced that he would resign if the highway was not completed by March 31, 2021.

This indirect warning led to fast pace work of construction of highway by the local company M/s T K Engineering Consortium Pvt. Ltd at cost of more around 200 crores.

With the arrival of monsoon, the walls and drainage systems made by the construction company are being washed away by the flood water.

The pathetic situation has made the locals to question the engineering of the construction company.

Reportedly, shop owners were forced to rush to their shops amid lockdown to save their goods from being damaged and swept away by the flood.

According to sources, more than 35 shops of Akashdeep market in Ganga area of Itanagar have been  flooded by water.

Amid the lockdown, the continuous downpour has thrown life out of gear in the state with several districts witnessing landslides and flood-like situation.
