Arunachal & Manipur Govts File Cases against Shaheen Bagh's Sharjeel ImamSharjeel

Itanagar, January 27, 2020:

Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Shaheen Bagh protester Sharjeel Imam for his recent provocative statement about separating Assam and other Northeastern states from India.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, Sharjeel Imam is seen addressing a gathering of Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA agitators and asking the Muslim protesters to join in large numbers and block railways tracks and roads. He also said that the main goal was to “cut Assam and the Northeast from India.”

He has drawn wide criticism for his controversial statement. A case has been registered against him by Guwahati Crime police department. Similarly, Itanagar Police and Manipur Police have also filed cases against him.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu shared the video of Sharjeel Imam on his Twitter handle and wrote, “This kind of provocation inciting secession of Assam & other NEstates from rest of India, creating communal disharmony, hampering severeignty & territorial Integrity of India will not be tolerated. Crime branch Itanagar have registered Case no.2/2020 U/S124(A)/153(A)153(B) IPC.”

Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also said that after examining the video and the Facebook profile of Imam, the Guwahati Police had registered the case against him.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has also informed through Twitter, “Taking cognisance of the objectionable video of Mr Sharjeel Imam, co-organiser of Shaheen Bagh protests, in which he threatened to sever Northeast from the rest of country, the Manipur Police has filed an FIR under sections 121/121-A/124-A/ 120-B /153 IPC.”
