ITANAGAR:The Arunachal police arrested three people from Holongi area on charges of demanding extortion money of Rs 30 lakh from a woman from Itanagar.
The accused have been identified as Khamin Swargiary (34), a resident of Domoria village under Tamulpur PS in Assam’s Baksa district, Janik Basumatary (25) of Bikrampur (Sootea) and Majirul Islam (25) of Bakula (Jamuguri), Sonitpur.
Sharing the details of the case, Capital SP Jimmy Chiram said as per the written FIR received at Chimpu Police station an unknown person posing himself as a member of ULFA(I) called the lady, who resides at Gohpur, and demanded Rs 30 lakh and threatened her of dire consequences if she fails to fulfill the demand.
Upon registration of the FIR, the investigation was taken up.
In the interim, one of the extortionists had called the complainant asking her to pay Rs 1.5 lakh near Hollongi. Subsequently, a police team led by Itanagar SDPO Kamdam Sikom caught the alleged extortionists from Assam-Arunachal border area near Hollongi check gate on November 10.
Sp Jimmy Chiram informed that the preliminary interrogation has brought out that Khamin Swargiary has been an active member of NDFB(S) since 2004, while Janik Basumatary's father and mother in-laws were employed by the complainant as domestic help and he used to visit the complainant’s house to see his in-laws.
Meanwhile, the Capital Police has appreciated the assistance provided by the in-charge of Hollongi check gate and I/C Rajgarh police outpost (Assam) during the operation.
