Arunachal: School principal sentenced to 20-yr imprisonment for sodomy

ITANAGAR: A school principal sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI), for engaging in sodomy with a minor student.

The court found accused Jayaprakash PD guilty of aggravated sexual assault and forced sodomy and condemned him under Sections 6 of the POCSO Act (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) and section 377 of the Indian Penal Code.

He was sentenced to a 20-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) under Section 6 of the POCSO Act, as well as a 10-year RI under Section 377 of the IPC. Both sentences will run at the same time.

He was also fined Rs.2,000 under Section 6 of the POCSO Act and Rs 1,000 under Section 377 of the IPC, according to the court.

If the criminal does not pay the fines, he will be sentenced to six months in prison plus an additional month in jail under each section.

POCSO Court Special Judge Tage Halley imposed the sentences on June 29 in the Leparada district.

According to the court, Jayaprakash had been engaging in sodomy with the student for two months and was detained under the two sections after the boy's father filed a FIR at the Daporijo police station.

Inspector Gejum Basar conducted an investigation and filed the chargesheet on July 25, 2019, 18 days after the FIR was filed. On August 14, 2019, the SP forwarded the chargesheet to the POSCO court in Basar. Karken Angu was the public prosecutor.

“Instead of providing every possible care and protection to the young learner (victim) through his rightful and progressive education, including inevitable moral value, the accused-convict has chosen to engage in one of the most heinous crimes against minors in person and society as a whole to satiate his lust. As a result, it is the court's sole responsibility to transmit a suitable punishing message to the accused-convict within the law, so that society's collective consciousness does not lose faith in the judiciary,” said the judge in an open court.
