Arunachal: Scores of Tourists Throng 'Parshuram Kund' on Holy Occasion of Makar Sankranti

Tourists from across the Northeast have started flocking in droves to Parshuram Kund, a Hindu pilgrimage centre situated on the Brahmaputra plateau in the lower reaches of the Lohit River and 21 km north of Tezu in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh.

A visit to the Kund, which is widely regarded as one of the holiest of sites in India, revealed that saints and ascetics from all over the nation had arrived in great numbers to take dips in the holy waters of the site.

Located at a distance of 180 kms from Tinsukia in Assam, a tourist travelling to the Kund via this route will reach the Dirak check point at the Assam-Arunachal border. After entering Arunachal, the 3 hour journey on Arunachal roads will treat the visitor to picturesque sights of the majestic hills and dales and breathtaking scenaries.

At the Parshuram Kund, it can be seen that the local authorities have taken every measure that the pilgrims do not have to face any inconvenience.

At the Parshuram Kund, a large temple dedicated to Parshuram, one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu, has been constructed, where the devotees can offer their prayers after taking dips in the holy water.

To reach the Kund, the pilgrims have to take a steep staircase that wins down to the Kund.

The site is thronged by scores of devotees -- both Indians and foreign nationals -- as soon as January sets in, the time when Makar Sankranti, Bihu, and several other festivals are held across the length and breadth of the nation.

It is widely believed that if one takes a dip in the Kund on 12-15 January, . On the day of Makar Sankranti, people form queues as long as the eye can see.

Now, all sorts of amenities are being availed by the tourists -- small shops selling everyday-use items have also sprung up in the vicinity.

"I finally here....have been planning for a long time. Feel rejuvenated after bathing here. The Government should ensure development in this place", a tourist from Itanagar told us.

It may be mentioned here that dedicated to sage Parshuram, the popular site attracts pilgrims from Nepal, from across India, and from nearby states of Manipur and Assam. Over 70,000 devotees and sadhus take a holy dip in its water each year on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, in the month of January.
