After serving in the Indian Army for the last 13 years under various capacities, including having been a part of India’s International UN Peace keeping force deployed in Congo, Ponung Doming was on Tuesday promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel at Pune.
The message of Lt. Col. Ponung Doming’s achievement and promotion has spread like a wildfire, as congratulations have started pouring in from all corners of Arunachal.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu also took to social media to state his happiness and joy at Doming making the entire state proud.
“A proud moment for all of us, Major Ponung Doming creates history. She is first woman Army officer from Arunachal to be promoted as Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army. Hearty congratulations and best wishes”, stated Khandu in his post.

While speaking from Pune, Lt. Col. Ponung Doming told media that she is elated due to her promotion.
“My parents are with me right now, after travelling all the way from Arunachal Pradesh to attend and witness my promotion, which is a proud moment for my parents also. I am happy and delighted that the Chief Minister has also congratulated me, which is a source of motivation for me.
She further adds that she had many financial difficulties, which could not deter her.
"I wish and suggest every youths of our state to be determined and sincere in whatever field they choose. My advice to the young aspirants of our Arunachal Pradesh and the region is that, dream big and above all, have the courage to achieve or fulfil that in whatever field they are eyeing into”, added Lt. Colonel Ponung Doming from Pune.
Her mother, Smti Jimmy Dai Doming, who works in the forest department, also happened to be a social worker under Adi Baane Kebang Women Wing. She said that she is very proud due to her daughter’s promotion. Meanwhile Adi Baane Kebang, the apex & appellate body of Adi tribe, have also expressed their happiness over Ponung Doming becoming the first lady army Lieutenant Colonel from the state.

Born to father Olom Doming and mother Jimmi Dai Doming of Pasighat, Lt. Col. Doming pursued her studies from the Government Daying Ering Higher Secondary School and the IGJ Government Higher Secondary School, both in Pasighat. Then, she did her civil engineering from the Walchand College of Engineering in Maharashtra, and was later commissioned into the Indian Army as a lieutenant in 2008 after clearing Service Selection Board exams at Allahabad and after four years and a half, she was promoted to the rank of major.
“I will consider myself blessed, if am able to inspire even a single person to do whatever little we can do for our state and the country”, added Lt. Col. Doming.
