Recommendations from Northeast child rights convention to shape policies for next 20 years: NHRC member

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) member Priyank Kanoongo on Saturday, August 1, said the recommendations emerging from the two-day Regional Convention of the State Commissions for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCRs) would help shape child protection policies and strengthen institutional mechanisms across the country for the next two decades.

Addressing the valedictory session at the Kalawangpo Convention Hall in Itanagar, Kanoongo expressed confidence that the policy outcomes of the convention would contribute to building a safer future for children and help realise the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

"The policy recommendations and deliberations from this convention will guide child protection initiatives and strengthen institutional mechanisms across the country over the next 20 years," he said.

The two-day regional convention, organised by the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (APSCPCR), brought together chairpersons, members and senior officials of SCPCRs from across the Northeast to discuss ways to strengthen child protection systems through greater inter-state cooperation and coordinated action.

Kanoongo lauded the APSCPCR for creating a common regional platform for the northeastern states, saying the outcomes of the convention could serve as a benchmark for child welfare initiatives across the country.

During the technical sessions, delegates presented case studies, shared best practices and discussed strategies to address emerging challenges affecting children in the region. The deliberations focused on institutional convergence, community participation and the adoption of successful models across states.

The convention concluded with all participating northeastern states jointly pledging to build a safe, inclusive and child-friendly environment, ensuring protection, care and equal opportunities for every child.
