Khonsa, June 29, 2019:

Two United Liberation Front of Assam, Independent (ULFA-I) cadres were arrested by the troops of Assam Rifles from Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh on Friday evening.

The duo were apprehended by the Assam Rifles after they had sneaked in from their base in Myanmar.

The duo have been identified as Nayan Jyoti Nath of Tezpur and Manesho Ali of Chabua in Upper Assam's Dibrugarh district.

During preliminary interrogations carried out by the security forces, the cadres had admitted that they had to flee towards India after their camps were run over by the Myanmar army (also known as the 'Tatmadaw') sometime ago.

They also stated that there is acute shortage of food materials in the camps and most of the cadres have lost contacts with their hierarchy.

Reports suggest that the insurgent groups ULFA (I) and NDFB (S) might be on its last legs in Myanmar and the cadres stationed in Myanmar are desperate for the feel of familiar Assamese soil under their feet.

It has also been alleged that ULFA (I) leader Paresh Baruah has orchestrated the deaths of youths who sought to return to Assam due to the ULFA’s ‘no return’ policy. Baruah, however, has categorically denied the reports and said that they were being punished for other crimes.

The United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) and the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (S) outfits have been hit hard with many cadres surrendering to the armed forces after re-entry into the homeland.
