According to media reports, the ULFA militants opened fire when they sighted the security personnel, who were reportedly carrying out anti-insurgency operations, to make a quick getaway into the thickness of the jungle.

Villagers said that they were woken up at dawn by the sound of firing in the distance, and later were intimated about the presence of militants in the area.

Meanwhile, the Government of Assam is reaching out to the ULFA leadership, and especially its Commander-in-Chief Paresh Baruah, to join the peace parlays.
