Congress President Rahul Gandhi has begun the party’s election campaign in Arunachal Pradesh today where he slammed the BJP leadership for its attempt to impose the ideology of Nagpur by enacting the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the Northeast.
RaGa further stated that the Congress party would safeguard the language and culture of the people from the “assaults” of the Nagpur-based RSS and would never let the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill be passed in the Parliament. Addressing the “unique problems and difficulties” faced by the people of the Northeast, RaGa (as he is popularly known) stated that the Northeast states would be again accorded the ‘special state’ status if the party is voted into power.
Bringing up the issue of the controversial Bill, RaGa assured the gathering at IG Park in Itanagar that the Bill would not be passed. “BJP leaders said that they would implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the entire Northeast. Nothing can be a greater assault on the culture, language and the people of the Northeast. It is a way of weakening you and to destroy your way of life. We, the Congress party will not let the Bill pass, come whatever may. And why is that? It is because we have a heart-to-heart connection with the Northeast and with Arunachal and it is our belief that the history of the Northeast is the strength of India and we don’t want to enforce our ideology on the whole nation”, said RaGa.
