The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) has strongly condemned two recent cases of alleged medical negligence at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), which led to the deaths of an infant and a young mother.
Addressing the issue, AAPSU president Tana Doji criticized TRIHMS—the state’s lone medical college—for what he described as “experimentation on patients” by inexperienced junior doctors. He said the incidents raise serious legal and ethical concerns, noting that medical negligence in such cases can also attract criminal liability.
One of the cases involved the death of 22-year-old Gora Ama, a resident of Kurung Kumey district, who reportedly died during a C-section surgery on Saturday. In an earlier incident, the family of a newborn alleged that their baby died due to the administration of sleeping injections and improper treatment while being referred to Dibrugarh.
“We express solidarity with the grieving families. If investigations confirm negligence or insincere behavior, we will not spare those responsible. TRIHMS must not treat people as subjects for experimentation,” Doji asserted. He further stated that AAPSU is pursuing the matter and will explore legal options through criminal courts, civil courts, or consumer protection forums.
The union has demanded a thorough inquiry into both cases and stressed the need for accountability from the medical fraternity to prevent such tragedies in the future.
