The 8th edition of the state-level Hangpan Dada Memorial Trophy (HDMT) for football and volleyball (U-16 boys and girls) was inaugurated by Panchayati Raj, Rural Development and Transport Minister Ojing Tasing in East Siang district, Arunachal Pradesh on May 23.
The opening ceremony paid floral tributes and candlelight homage to Martyr Hangpan Dada, with his wife and dignitaries joining the solemn observance.
Minister Ojing Tasing praised the efforts of host MLA Tapi Darang and East Siang DC Tayi Taggu for organizing the event, highlighting sports as a unifier that instills discipline and promotes physical fitness. He emphasized the government's commitment to encouraging sports culture under the leadership of Chief Minister Pema Khandu.
Guest of Honour and MLA Ninong Ering, quoting, “The boat cannot be crossed due to fear of waves, those who try never lose,” motivated young athletes and thanked the state government and Martyr Dada’s family.
Local MLA Tapi Darang and DC Tayi Taggu also addressed the gathering, encouraging players and expressing gratitude for the opportunity to host the event. Martyr Dada’s daughter appreciated the state’s effort to honor her father’s legacy through the tournament.
In the opening football match, Kra Dadi defeated Lower Subansiri 2-1.
