Arunachal celebrates Solung festival showcasing Adi community's rich heritage

The Adi community of Arunachal Pradesh celebrated its traditional agricultural festival Solung with enthusiasm across the state, showcasing its rich cultural heritage, traditions and strong connection with agriculture.

In Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh Sports and Law Minister Kento Jini attended the Solung Festival as the chief guest, while All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU) president Meje Taku was present as the guest of honour. Liromoba MLA Pesi Jilen, MLA Tojir Kadu and MLA Nari Koyu also attended the celebrations.

Solung is the principal socio-religious and agriculture-based festival of the Adi community. Celebrated after the sowing season, the festival is associated with prayers for prosperity, a good harvest and successful cultivation of rice, fruits and other crops.

The celebrations featured traditional rituals, community feasts and cultural performances, including the Ponung dance, reflecting the community's ancestral traditions and collective spirit.

The festival holds deep significance for the Adi people, whose traditional way of life has historically been closely linked to agriculture. Solung brings communities together to celebrate their cultural identity while seeking blessings for a prosperous agricultural season.

Speaking at the event, AAPSU president Meje Taku urged the younger generation to preserve the community's rich traditions and culture. He also called upon people to use their mother tongue frequently at home to ensure that the language and cultural heritage are passed on to future generations.

Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kento Jini urged people to celebrate their traditional festivals and continue valuing their cultural heritage.

He stressed the importance of preserving tribal identity and indigenous traditions while encouraging younger generations to remain connected with their cultural roots.

Jini also expressed gratitude for the warm reception he received during the celebration and appreciated the traditional dance performances that showcased the richness of Adi culture. He thanked the people of Itanagar for their hospitality and the organisers for conducting the festival.

The celebrations were organised by the Solung Festival Celebration Committee, Itanagar Capital Region-2026, led by president Kanki Darang and general secretary Dr David Gao.

The festival served as a platform to preserve ancestral traditions while strengthening unity, fraternity and cultural pride among communities across Arunachal Pradesh.
