In a significant move aimed at promoting sustainable livelihoods and boosting fish production near the Indo-China border, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu distributed fish seeds to local farmers in Shi Yomi district. The initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Fisheries, seeks to enhance self-employment opportunities through the promotion of fish culture in remote border regions.
The distribution ceremony took place at the renowned Trout Fish Farm in Dechenthang village, located approximately 30 kilometers from the India-China border and close to Mechuka town. The event was attended by local MLA and Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona, who joined the Chief Minister in encouraging youth to engage in fish farming and other agri-allied sectors professionally to achieve self-sufficiency and ensure quality local produce.
CM Khandu, in his address, highlighted the potential of aquaculture in transforming rural economies, especially in border regions with limited employment opportunities. “Fisheries can be a powerful tool for self-reliance. Our youth must view it as a profession and not just a fallback,” he said.
The Trout Fish Farm at Dechenthang, owned by Lakra Dorjee Onge, has emerged as a model for rural entrepreneurship in the region. Speaking exclusively to India Today, Onge expressed gratitude for the Chief Minister’s visit to his remote farm, calling it a strong motivational gesture for local farmers. He detailed that in a single seasonal cycle, his farm supplies trout to the entire Mechuka town, including hotels and homestays, thanks to continued support from the state government and the local MLA.
“Seeing the Chief Minister here in person has inspired us to work harder,” Onge said, adding that with additional assistance, the farm’s productivity could be scaled up further to meet rising demand.
Meanwhile, IPS officer Rohit Rajbir Singh, currently on a tour of Mechuka, also shared his views with India Today, expressing admiration for the valley’s natural beauty. “Mechuka is a paradise. I urge tourists from across India and abroad to visit this breathtaking destination,” he said.
