Arunachal couple revives traditional tribal architecture with sustainable homestay

A couple residing in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh, has transformed their Jameri Homestay into an authentic representation of traditional tribal architecture, offering travelers a unique glimpse into the region’s culture and slow-paced lifestyle.

Bachu Libasow and Pema Yangjom, a middle-aged couple from Jameri, took on the challenge of integrating vernacular Arunachali design into their homestay while ensuring an immersive experience for visitors. Their aim was to preserve indigenous architecture and create a sustainable, community-driven retreat for tourists journeying along the Tawang Corridor via the Nechipu Tunnel.

Running the homestay is no small feat. The couple works tirelessly, with minimal rest, to ensure guests experience the warmth of Arunachal Pradesh’s hospitality. “We curate experiences that connect travelers with the local community while using locally sourced ingredients to add a contemporary touch to traditional cuisine,” said Bachu Libasow.

Their dedication caught the attention of popular YouTuber Kapil Parashar, the creator of Ghumakkad Bugz, who visited Jameri Homestay in his caravan. Impressed by their unwavering commitment, he shared his experience, stating, “My wife and I were truly touched by the couple’s hospitality and relentless efforts. Arunachal Pradesh and its people always welcome guests with a smile, making it a remarkable travel destination.”

With the increasing popularity of Tawang and Dirang, the homestay has welcomed thousands of guests, benefiting from its strategic location along a major tourist route. The couple's dedication is a testament to the saying “Hard work pays off”, as maintaining a homestay demands round-the-clock effort—from guest management and cooking to cleaning and property upkeep.

Pema Yangjom, who belongs to the Monpa community, and Bachu Libasow, from the Aka tribe, have poured their hearts into this initiative. Their commitment extends beyond architecture and hospitality, as they have also nurtured hundreds of orchids and indigenous flowers, making their homestay an eco-friendly sanctuary that beautifully reflects Arunachal’s natural splendor.
