The first snowfall of the season blanketed the route from Tawang to Bum-La Pass today, October 23, drawing thousands of visitors to this strategic location along the Sino-Indian border in Arunachal Pradesh.
The historic Bum-La Pass, situated at 15,200 feet and infamous as the invasion route during the 1962 Sino-Indian War, transformed into a winter wonderland as tourists from major cities including Assam, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru gathered to witness the spectacle.
The snowfall comes as Tawang prepares to host its second annual marathon tomorrow, adding to the region's growing appeal as a winter destination. Located 37 kilometres from the pass, Tawang has emerged as a popular tourist spot between October and December.
Speaking to India Today NE, tourists expressed their excitement to witness the zero pollution zone in Arunachal.
The area is home to significant landmarks including the centuries-old Tawang Monastery, one of the largest Buddhist monasteries in India, and the Tawang War Memorial, which commemorates soldiers who died defending the region.
Local tourism officials report increasing visitor numbers, drawn by the combination of historical significance, spiritual heritage, and natural beauty. The district's proximity to the Indo-China border continues to attract domestic tourists interested in visiting strategically important locations while experiencing the region's pristine environment.
