Arunachal: Free medical camp organised at Nabam Deepak Living Home benefitting hundreds

A multi-specialty health camp was organised at the Nabam Deepak Living Home in Sopo village by the Indian Medical Association, Arunachal Pradesh (IMA-AP) and the Arunachal Pradesh Doctors’ Association (APDA), to commemorate National Doctors’ Day. The initiative saw hundreds of underprivileged inmates receiving free medical care.

The camp brought together a wide range of medical treatments, screenings, and specialist consultations. More than 50 doctors from across the ICR region volunteered for the noble cause, aiming to support patients who lack financial resources and caretakers.

Speaking to India Today NE, Dr. Kesang Wangdi Thongdok, President of IMA-AP, shared that the event was part of a month-long series of social service activities leading up to Doctors’ Day on July 1. “Last week, we organised a highway cleaning drive, and now we are conducting a free medical screening at this destitute centre. Many here are abandoned by families and suffer from psychological illnesses, prompting us to conduct multi-level screenings,” he said.

Dr. Thongdok added, “This entire initiative is sponsored by the doctors' community. We also appreciate the voluntary support of Doimukh MLA Nabam Vivek, who came forward to contribute to this noble cause in his home constituency. Through this event, we are also promoting government health schemes such as PMAY, ABHA, CMAAY, and TB screening.”

Renowned social activist Deepak Nabam, whose humanitarian work was lauded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Mann Ki Baat radio programme, also spoke to India Today. “My living home accommodates 304 destitute individuals, most of whom are based in Itanagar. Due to limited infrastructure, we recently shifted a few to this new facility in Sopo, inaugurated in May 2025,” he said.

“I thank Chief Minister Pema Khandu for his moral and physical support, which helped make this 50-bedded living home a reality. The Prime Minister’s recognition of my work is deeply appreciated, and I will continue to serve those abandoned by society,” he added.

Upholding the spirit of the medical community, the theme of the event was “Healing Hands, Caring Hearts.” The organising team included Dr. Kesang Wangdi Thongdok (Chairman), Dr. Dusu Gambo (Organising Secretary), and Dr. Tumge Loyi (Social Service Secretary).

Director of Health Services (DHS) Dr. Marbom Basar attended as the chief guest. He applauded the organising committee and Deepak Nabam for their compassionate service, stating that such efforts from the doctor community restore faith in humanity.

The health camp offered consultations in Psychiatry, Dermatology, General Medicine, Surgery, ENT, Gynaecology, Dental Care, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, and laboratory services. Additionally, registration desks for government health schemes - ABHA Health ID, CMAAY, PMJAY, and Vay Vandana - were set up on-site.

The Doctors’ Day celebration officially began with a cleanliness drive near IMA House on NH-415 on June 1, 2025, and will conclude on July 1, 2025, at Waii International.
