Arunachal Government to launch creative economy cell to boost indigenous art and fashion
The fourth edition of Arunachal Runway, a prominent fashion platform showcasing indigenous design and culture, concluded in Itanagar with Chief Minister Pema Khandu announcing that the event will be institutionalised as an annual feature. He also committed government support for tribal designers and artisans and unveiled plans to establish an Arunachal Creative Economy Cell under the Chief Minister’s Office.
Addressing the gathering as Chief Guest, Khandu said the proposed cell will aim to support artists, creative designers and musicians across the state. He emphasised the need to promote Arunachal Pradesh’s traditional attire and music beyond national boundaries, expressing hope that local designs and songs would gain wider acceptance across Asian countries.
The grand finale was attended by Dr Tana Showren as Guest of Honour and Chowna Mein (Note: if Namchoom intended, adjust accordingly) as Special Guest, alongside other dignitaries.
Founded by noted designer Gona Niji, Arunachal Runway has emerged as a key platform promoting indigenous fashion while encouraging young designers to draw inspiration from tribal traditions. The initiative focuses on preserving cultural identity through contemporary expression and providing visibility to local artisans.
The fourth edition was held under the theme “Ngul Nyishi,” highlighting the traditions of the Nyishi tribe. The event featured eight designers presenting 32 collections inspired by local festivals, textiles and heritage motifs.
Social media influencer Shiva Yadav, popularly known as Shiva Tells, praised the initiative and its cultural significance. He noted that despite travelling to over 35 countries, Arunachal Pradesh remains one of the most beautiful and relatively unexplored regions, underscoring the importance of platforms that promote its cultural richness.
With the state government’s commitment to institutional support and global outreach, Arunachal Runway is expected to play a larger role in positioning the region’s indigenous fashion and creative industries on national and international platforms.
