Arunachal: IAS Officer turns traffic guardian, takes the lead in easing traffic woes

Talo Potom, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Capital Itanagar on Jnauary 29 took charge at the Yupia Tri-junction on NH415 in Arunachal Pradesh managing the traffic flow with a hands-on approach. A viral video capturing his dedicated efforts has sparked admiration and conversations about the role of administrators in addressing on-ground challenges.

Speaking to India Today NE, Talo Potom downplayed the attention stating that such actions are part of his normal and irregular routine. "This is actually normal and irregular routine only. Today also, I had conducted a raid against the use of non-recommended polythene. These exercises are normal and regular routine work, so nothing is special," he said.

Potom's commitment to public service and problem-solving dates back over a decade. In his earlier role as an additional district magistrate, he noticed traffic issues arising from a shortage of police personnel in traffic management. Inspired by Kolkata's model, he successfully advocated for the recruitment of traffic wardens which significantly improved traffic management.

Reflecting on his proactive approach, Potom stated, "Our responsibility is to ensure that people in all aspects of life do not suffer. Traffic needs to be managed through engineering, regulation and practical enforcement." He spoke about his involvement in a High Power Committee focused on reducing traffic congestion in the Capital Complex with short-term, medium-term, and long-term plans underway.

Beyond traffic management, Potom has been actively addressing other pressing issues faced by the people including garbage management and law and order. He shared recent activities, such as conducting raids to seize non-recommended plastics, raising awareness on parking and ensuring hygienic practices among meat sellers.

Regarding his recent stint at the Yupia Tri-junction, Potom described the challenges faced by commuters due to distracted driving. "Vehicles' drivers are busy on mobiles, talking while driving, causing unnecessary delays and congestion," he explained. His on-foot intervention successfully cleared the traffic within one and half hours.

When asked about the role of an IAS officer in direct engagement with the public, Potom stated the significance of administrators being the solution. He shared, "Any problem faced by the people should be resolved in the soldier. Wherever I go, whatever I see, I am always looking for a solution."

Looking ahead, Potom highlighted upcoming infrastructure projects aimed at reducing traffic congestion, including bypass roads and bridges. He urged senior officers to come down to the ground, stating, "Nothing is done in the air-conditioned room. Development and every problem are on the ground only."
