Arunachal MLA pledges strict action as molestation, suicide cases rock state schools
Expressing anguish over the recent cases of child molestation in Mebo School and student suicide incidents in Pasighat, Tsering Lhamu, Advisor to the Women and Child Development (WCD) Department and MLA from Lumla, has assured that strict action will be taken against the school authorities found guilty of negligence or failure to promote mental health awareness among students.
In an interaction with India Today, Lhamu described the incidents as “deeply distressing,” emphasizing that despite multiple awareness initiatives undertaken by the department, such tragic occurrences continue to surface.
“Our department has been conducting regular awareness programmes on child rights, the POCSO Act, and mental health in schools across the state. Yet, the emergence of such shocking cases is truly painful,” she said.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to child welfare, Lhamu mentioned ongoing initiatives such as Child Protection Committees and One Stop Centres, which are designed to support women and children affected by violence and other crimes.
She urged parents, especially those whose children are in residential or boarding schools, to actively monitor their children’s mental health, emotional wellbeing, and behavior patterns, stressing that collective vigilance from both parents and institutions is essential to prevent such incidents.
“The Women & Child Development Department will ensure justice for the victims and take stern action against schools where molestation has occurred. The culprits will face strict punishment under the law,” Lhamu asserted, adding that awareness and sensitivity within the school environment are crucial to ensuring student safety.
The Advisor’s remarks come amid growing public concern over rising cases of child abuse and psychological distress among students in various parts of Arunachal Pradesh, prompting calls for enhanced mental health monitoring and accountability mechanisms in educational institutions.
