Arunachal Pradesh hosts 22nd National MTB Championship; Northeast emerges as India’s mountain biking hub

Arunachal Pradesh has once again placed the Northeast on India’s sporting map as it hosts the 22nd National Mountain Bike (MTB) Cycling Championship in Roing, Lower Dibang Valley district.

The championship, organised by the Cycling Federation of India in collaboration with the Arunachal Cycling Association, has drawn 512 riders from 29 states. The four-day event, being held from February 12 to 15, is unfolding on a challenging 3.9-km technical trail near the Eze River, showcasing the state’s rugged Himalayan terrain.

With its unique topography and growing sports infrastructure, Arunachal Pradesh has rapidly emerged as a premier destination for mountain biking in India. The successful hosting of the national championship is being seen as a significant boost for sports tourism in the Northeast.

Speaking to India Today NE, Cycling Federation of India Secretary General Maninder Pal Singh said the event reflects the success of grassroots talent identification programmes. “Lesser known players are winning medals and I am really happy that new riders are securing podium finishes. This is part of our talent identification programme. The Arunachal Cycling Association deserves credit,” he said.

Taka Tamut, renowned mountaineer and Secretary of the Arunachal Cycling Association, informed that 36 medals were awarded across senior, junior and other categories. “More than eight champions were awarded today. Injuries are part of the game and we are assisting riders with medical aid,” he said.

Explaining the choice of venue, Tamut added, “We selected Roing as it is near the railway station and airport and has the best topography for mountain biking.” He further stated that elimination rounds featuring ten races were scheduled from the morning session.

On the second day, southern states such as Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Kerala delivered strong performances, clinching multiple medals across categories.

The championship will continue till February 15, further cementing Arunachal Pradesh’s position as the mountain biking capital of Northeast India.
