Arunachal: Rumgong family builds public gallery to ease infrastructure gap in Siang district
A major addition to Arunachal's Rumgong town's public infrastructure was made on December 17 with the donation of a public gallery and shelter at the General Playground, a space central to the town's cultural and sporting life.
The facility has been donated by the family of the late Tajir Mibang, a social activist from Rumgong, as a community asset rather than a private memorial. The gallery is expected to benefit thousands of residents who use the ground for major events, including the Solung festival, sports tournaments and public gatherings.
The structure was formally unveiled by the additional deputy commissioner of Siang district, who described the initiative as a meaningful contribution at a time when the town continues to face shortages in basic infrastructure. He said such facilities strengthen community participation and assured that the district administration would ensure proper maintenance of the gallery.
Local officials noted that the General Playground is one of the few multipurpose venues in the area, making the new shelter particularly important for spectators and participants during large events and adverse weather.
Speaking to India Today NE, a member of the Mibang family said the project was funded through voluntary contributions from family members. He added that the decision to build a public asset was taken after obtaining necessary permissions and was intended to honour their forefather's memory through service to the community rather than symbolic structures.
Residents have welcomed the initiative, calling it a practical and timely intervention that reflects the late activist's commitment to public welfare.
