India is all set to host its first high-altitude marathon in the picturesque town of Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, on October 1. This groundbreaking event, a joint effort by the Indian Army and the Arunachal Pradesh government, aims to place Tawang on the international marathon map while promoting the spirit of unity, commitment to sports, and a healthy lifestyle.
Lieutenant General Manish Erry, while addressing the eager runners, shared, "For the runners, I would like to tell all of them that all arrangements have been made, special arrangements have been made for the medical part, as it is a high-altitude area. The state government has also helped us with the arrangements... This marathon (high-altitude marathon) is the fastest-growing sport with maximum participation in the world... everyone can participate in this... My message to everyone is that come and join this fun."
This extraordinary marathon will be the first of its kind in the entire northeastern region of India and is expected to be one of the most challenging in the country. Registration for the event closed on September 18, with an overwhelming response from participants hailing from 25 different states. Remarkably, the event boasts over 550 women participants, highlighting the inclusive nature of the marathon.
The marathon offers a range of categories to challenge participants' physical limits, including the prestigious full marathon covering 42.195 kilometers, a half marathon of 21.0975 kilometers, and shorter 10 or five-kilometer races. The prize money for participants ranges up to Rs 75,000 in various categories, encompassing open, defense, and foreign participants in different age groups.
The event not only seeks to provide a unique and unforgettable experience to participants but also aims to foster the promotion of sports, a healthy lifestyle, and the spirit of unity among people from diverse backgrounds.
